House Speaker Johnson expressed confidence in ending the partial shutdown of the US federal government before Tuesday and stated that there will be enough Republican votes to pass the federal spending bill.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson stated that he is confident the partial government shutdown in the United States will end by Tuesday and that there will be enough Republican votes to pass a federal spending bill. Johnson said in an interview, "Let me put it this way, I am confident that we can at least get this done by Tuesday," "We face logistical challenges of getting everyone back to Washington. And based on my conversation with Hakeem Jeffries, I know that we need to pass a rule, and it may largely be up to us to do it." The Senate approved a spending plan last Friday that includes funding for government agencies through September and passed a two-week stopgap funding measure for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This legislation must be approved by the House of Representatives, which is currently in recess until Monday. Johnson noted, "They are going to separate out the DHS bill," "Our intention is to fund all federal government agencies except that department by Tuesday. Then we will engage in a two-week good-faith negotiation to resolve (the DHS) issue." Over the weekend, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries informed Johnson that, given the Democratic opposition to funding the Department of Homeland Security without reforms (even if only temporary), do not expect Democratic votes. Democratic lawmakers have called for restrictions on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following the killing of two American citizens by ICE agents in Minneapolis.
