Musk attended the World Economic Forum in Davos for the first time and had a conversation with Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock.
Billionaire Elon Musk will travel to Davos for the first time to attend the World Economic Forum. For years, he has been at odds with the organizers of this annual gathering of the wealthy. Musk has confirmed his last-minute participation in a meeting on Thursday afternoon, where he will engage in a conversation with the CEO of BlackRock, Larry Fink. As the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, Musk's appearance signifies a significant shift in the relationship between the world's richest person and the event. Every January, this event attracts world leaders, billionaires, and global media to the Swiss mountains. Previously, Musk's ally, former US President Trump, delivered a speech lasting over an hour on Wednesday covering a range of topics from regulatory scrutiny to why the US should control Greenland. Musk was also invited last year but did not attend. In the past, Musk has called this annual gathering of the world's elite "boring" and harshly criticized the World Economic Forum (WEF) as a "non-elected world government that people never asked for and don't want." "Why hasn't WEF/Davos disappeared yet? Do they want to be the 'masters of the world'?" he posted on his social media platform X in 2022. Headquartered in Geneva, the non-profit organization World Economic Forum aims to promote cooperation between governments and businesses to "serve society and the planet." The organization has also made similar responses. A spokesperson in 2023 stated that Musk has not been invited since 2015. Last year, when organizers invited newly elected Trump and Musk to attend, the relationship began to thaw. The World Economic Forum welcomed Musk's participation last year because people were interested in his "new role in the Trump administration." Although Musk subsequently left his position in the Trump administration aimed at improving government efficiency, he remains central to a range of key global issues, including SpaceX's role in providing internet access in places like Iran and Ukraine, and the strong protests sparked by the sexualized images generated by his Grok artificial intelligence tool.
