Founder Jeff Bezos' space technology company Blue Origin announced on Wednesday plans to deploy 5408 satellites into space to build a communication network called "TeraWave," aiming to compete with SpaceX and Amazon.com, Inc. Blue Origin stated that the communication network is mainly targeted towards businesses, data centers, and government users, providing data transmission speeds of up to 6 terabits per second by deploying satellites in low Earth orbit and medium Earth orbit ranging from 100 to 21,000 miles above the Earth's surface. The company anticipates deploying its satellites starting in the fourth quarter of 2027. Bezos is entering an increasingly crowded satellite internet market. The market is currently dominated by Elon Musk's SpaceX-operated Starlink service, which has deployed over 9000 satellites and serves around 9 million customers. Amazon.com, Inc., founded by Bezos in 1994, has also accelerated its satellite internet service over the past year. The service has recently been renamed from "Project Kuiper" to "Leo." Amazon.com, Inc. plans to build a network consisting of 3236 near-Earth orbit satellites to serve commercial institutions, government, and consumers. Since April last year, Amazon.com, Inc. has launched 180 satellites into space through a series of rocket launches with partners like the United Launch Alliance and SpaceX. Blue Origin is expected to undertake some future launch missions. In November last year, the company opened the "Enterprise Preview" service to some users before fully commercializing. Bezos predicted in 2024 that Blue Origin will one day grow into a larger enterprise than Amazon.com, Inc. He founded Blue Origin in 2000 and it is currently led by former Amazon.com, Inc. devices business head Dave Limp as CEO. Bezos said in 2024, "I think this will be the most remarkable business I have ever been involved in, but it will take time." Blue Origin is primarily a rocket launch company, conducting short-range space tourism and research flights. In January last year, the startup achieved a major breakthrough by successfully launching its tall "New Glenn" rocket, but at that time, it failed to recover the rocket booster on the barge. In November last year, after successfully launching two NASA spacecraft, Blue Origin finally achieved a precise landing and recovery of the "New Glenn" rocket booster.
