Elon Musk announced on social platform X on Wednesday that his brain-machine interface company Neuralink will begin mass production of brain-machine interface devices in 2026, while simultaneously advancing the full automation of the surgical process.
Neuralink has not yet responded to requests for comment on this matter.
It is understood that this implantable device is designed specifically for patients with spinal cord injuries. The first implant recipient has been able to play games, browse the internet, post on social media, and control a laptop cursor using the device.
Neuralink began human clinical trials in 2024, and has already addressed safety concerns raised by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which had rejected its initial application in 2022.
The company disclosed that as of September last year, 12 severely paralyzed patients worldwide have received implants and are able to control digital devices and physical tools through thoughts. Additionally, Neuralink received $650 million in funding support in June of the same year.
