Hong Kong Transport Department re-approves pilot licences for self-driving vehicles, covering the road section from the transfer parking lot to the airport sea and sky transfer building.
The Hong Kong Transport Department announced the approval for a test project involving autonomous vehicles to operate on a designated route connecting the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge Hong Kong Port "Transfer Parking Lot" to the SkyPier at Hong Kong International Airport. The department hopes that after the test, the project can be operational to facilitate passengers traveling from Guangdong to Hong Kong. During the initial testing phase, each autonomous vehicle will have a backup operator onboard to take control if needed. All autonomous vehicles must display a designated tag from the Hong Kong Transport Department to help other road users identify them. Details of the project have been uploaded to the department's website for autonomous vehicle testing. The department aims to gradually move towards passenger service after completing the test, allowing passengers traveling from Guangdong to drive to the "Transfer Parking Lot" and then take an autonomous vehicle to the SkyPier for transfer. The department welcomes interested organizations or companies to submit applications for the pilot license. Upon receiving an application, the department will consider various factors such as the design and operation range of the autonomous driving system, relevant national or international standards/guidelines, and road testing conditions in accordance with the "Practical Guidelines for Testing and Pilot Use of Autonomous Vehicles".
