On Tuesday, after President Trump announced that the South Korean company, Hanwha Aerospace, will be constructing new frigates for the US Navy, the company's stock price surged over 11%. Trump stated at a press conference that these military vessels will be built at the Hanwha Philadelphia Shipyard. The shipyard was acquired by the South Korean company in 2024 and as part of South Korea's $150 billion shipbuilding commitment, Hanwha has pledged to invest $5 billion in the shipyard. This shipbuilding commitment is part of a broader US-South Korea trade agreement. Under the agreement, the US will reduce tariffs on South Korean exports to 15% in exchange for Seoul's commitment of $350 billion in investments and other concessions. Hanwha Aerospace is one of South Korea's major shipbuilding companies with expertise in constructing commercial vessels like LNG transport ships, as well as military naval platforms such as submarines and surface vessels. Data shows that South Korean defense stocks have performed strongly this year, with Hanwha Aerospace and Hyundai Rotem, among other major defense companies, seeing gains of over 170% and 270% respectively since the beginning of the year. Hanwha Aerospace has surged over 220% so far this year. Last week, the US Navy announced the FF(X) class of ships - a type of small combat vessel - which they stated will complement larger multi-mission warships and enhance global operational flexibility. Navy Secretary John Faren said that these new frigates will be part of Trump's envisioned "golden fleet." Trump mentioned on Monday that the US Navy will be constructing two new "Trump-class" battleships and may expand the number of such ships to as many as 25. Trump described these ships as "among the most lethal surface combatants," stating that the "Trump-class" battleships will be the "fastest, largest, and most powerful ships by far, equipped with hypersonic weapons, laser weapons, cruise missiles, and nuclear weapons.
