The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) today (December 19) announced the statistical data of payment cards issued in Hong Kong in the third quarter of 2025. According to the quarterly statistical data, the total number of credit cards in circulation in the market at the end of the third quarter of 2025 was 25.08 million, an increase of 10.0% compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 23.6% year-on-year. The volume and amount of credit card transactions (including retail sales and cash advances) are easily affected by seasonal factors and the overall economic environment, resulting in fluctuating trends. In the third quarter of 2025, the total transaction volume of credit cards was 382.61 million, an increase of 6.2% compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 16.3% compared to the same period in 2024. The total transaction amount of credit card transactions in the third quarter of 2025 was 285.6 billion Hong Kong dollars, an increase of 6.4% compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 14.8% compared to the same period in 2024. Of the total amount of transactions, 173.3 billion Hong Kong dollars (60.7%) were for local consumption, 103.1 billion Hong Kong dollars (36.1%) were for overseas consumption, and 9.1 billion Hong Kong dollars (3.2%) were for cash advances.
As for debit cards, due to the fact that one debit card can include more than one debit card brand, it is difficult to calculate the total number of debit cards in circulation in the market. Similar to credit card transactions, the volume and amount of debit card transactions involving retail sales and bill payments are also affected by seasonal factors. In the third quarter of 2025, the total transaction volume of debit cards involving retail sales and bill payments decreased by 9.6% compared to the previous quarter to 52.31 million transactions, and the total amount decreased by 5.6% to 62.7 billion Hong Kong dollars. Compared to the same period in 2024, the total transaction volume of debit cards in the third quarter of 2025 decreased by 3.2%, while the total amount decreased by 8.3%.
