On December 17th, the first meeting of the International Airport Super Hub Development Advisory Committee, chaired by the Director of Hong Kong's Transport and Logistics Bureau, Chen Meibao, marked an important step towards enhancing Hong Kong's status as an international aviation super hub. Chen Meibao stated that Hong Kong would leverage its advantage of being backed by the motherland and connected to the world, actively align with the "Fifteenth Five-Year Plan," and hoped that all committee members would contribute ideas to strengthen Hong Kong's leading position as an aviation super hub and continue to thrive. Chen Meibao stated at the meeting, "As an international aviation super hub, Hong Kong has firm support from the country and is connected to the world. The operation of the three-runway system has brought unprecedented growth to Hong Kong and helped us establish new global partnerships. The establishment of the committee reflects our commitment to expanding the aviation network, optimizing the multi-modal transport connections in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and nurturing professional talents." The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region stated in the 2025 Policy Address that the Hong Kong government is committed to strengthening Hong Kong's international aviation hub status through a multi-pronged strategy, including accelerating the expansion of the aviation network, optimizing multi-modal transport connections in the Greater Bay Area, promoting the development of Airport City, and consolidating Hong Kong's position as a leading global air freight hub. The committee unanimously supports the government's policy direction and provides recommendations on how to fully leverage Hong Kong's unique advantages under the principle of "one country, two systems." Some members believe that optimizing the multi-modal transport connections in the Greater Bay Area can promote sustainable growth of Hong Kong International Airport. In this regard, the Hong Kong government has been working closely with the aviation industry to strengthen the airport's multi-modal transport network and enhance Hong Kong's attractiveness as a transit hub in the Greater Bay Area. This includes expanding the scope of exemption from airport passenger departure tax starting from October 1st this year, providing greater incentives for transit passengers to use Hong Kong International Airport. Additionally, they are aware of the enthusiastic response from the market to the brand, SKYTOPIA, announced by the Airport Authority Hong Kong earlier this year, and provide suggestions on how to improve its socio-economic benefits. The International Airport Super Hub Development Advisory Committee was established on September 26th to provide high-level advice to the government on planning the future direction of Hong Kong's aviation industry. Members come from various fields, including aviation, business and finance, innovation technology, logistics and transportation, academia, and tourism, as well as representatives from relevant government departments. The term of office for committee members took effect on October 1st this year and lasts for two years.
