"They put words in my mouth" - Malicious editing triggers sky-high lawsuit! Trump claims $100 billion from BBC.
Trump sues BBC for $5 billion, claiming that the documentary "Panorama" constitutes defamation.
President Donald Trump formally filed a defamation lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in the Miami Federal Court on Monday evening local time, demanding a total of $100 billion in damages. The civil complaint accuses BBC of creating a "false, defamatory, deceptive, derogatory, inflammatory, and maliciously edited portrayal" of President Trump in a documentary as part of the "Panorama" program. The documentary aired one week before the 2024 elections.
According to the latest reports from the media, Trump's legal team filed a lawsuit against BBC in the Miami Federal Court on Monday, including one defamation charge and one charge of violating Florida trade laws, each seeking at least $50 billion in compensation. Therefore, Trump is seeking a total of $100 billion in exorbitant damages in this lawsuit against BBC.
The lawsuit alleges that the production of the documentary was "openly attempting to intervene and influence the outcome of the US elections, causing Trump himself to suffer harm."
The complaint points out that a popular documentary titled "Trump: Second Chance" aired last year on BBC's "Panorama" program and was maliciously edited to make it appear as if President Trump had clearly urged his supporters to attack the US Capitol building during a speech outside the White House on January 6, 2021.
"The 'Panorama' documentary falsely portrays President Trump as saying to his supporters: We are going to walk down to the Capitol building... And we are going to fight. We are going to struggle like hell and if you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore," the complaint states. "However, we all now know that President Trump never said those series of words," the complaint shows.
In fact, the complaint states that the sentence containing "And we are going to fight" was said almost 55 minutes after Trump said "I will be with you" in the speech.
BBC Chairman Samir Shah recently apologized for the "misjudgment" in the editing of this segment, and the Director General and News Director of the broadcasting organization have resigned.
BBC apologized to Trump on November 13 and promised not to air the documentary again or showcase it on any of its platforms.
"While the BBC deeply regrets the way the video clip was maliciously edited, we strongly disagree with the basis for defamation claims," the broadcasting organization said in a statement on November 13.
Earlier on Monday local time, Trump told reporters at the White House that he would soon be filing a lawsuit formally.
"In a little while, you'll see I'm suing BBC because they put words in my mouth," Trump emphasized in an interview. "Really, they keep putting words in my mouth. They make me say things I never said."
The complaint alleges that before the formal release of the "Panorama" documentary, concerns were raised within the BBC about the documentary, but the BBC management ignored these concerns and did not take corrective action.
The complaint also states that the documentary is "part of a pattern of BBC manipulating the content of President Trump's speeches in a misleading and malicious manner to defame him, including fabricating violent calls he never made."
It is worth noting that this lawsuit is the latest in a series of defamation complaints and claims brought by the media against the media organizations infamous for litigation.
In September, Trump filed a $150 billion lawsuit against The New York Times, accusing the newspaper of being the exclusive "mouthpiece" of the Democratic Party and repeatedly maliciously defaming Trump with fake news.
Earlier, in October 2024, Trump filed a $200 billion lawsuit against CBS, claiming that the network deceptively edited an interview with his election opponent, Kamala Harris, on the "60 Minutes" program.
CBS's parent company, Paramount Skydance, agreed to pay $16 million to settle the lawsuit in July, which will be allocated to Trump's future presidential library. The payment took place several weeks before the Federal Communications Commission approved an $8 billion acquisition plan between Paramount and Skydance Media; the commission is led by a professional appointed by Trump.
ABCTVB Media previously agreed to pay $15 million to Trump's library in December 2024 to settle a defamation lawsuit related to a civil jury ruling in a lawsuit involving anchor George Stephanopoulos inaccurately describing writer E. Jean Carroll's allegations against Trump.
