In the third quarter of 2025, the total income of Hong Kong residents (referring to the total income earned by Hong Kong residents through various economic activities) calculated at the prevailing market prices increased by 1.5% from the same period last year to HK$908.2 billion.
On December 15th, the Hong Kong government's Census and Statistics Department released preliminary statistics on the total income of local residents in Hong Kong and related figures for the third quarter of 2025. The total income of local residents in Hong Kong in the third quarter of 2025, calculated at current market prices, increased by 1.5% from the same period in the previous year to HK$908.2 billion. The estimated local production value in the same quarter, calculated at current market prices, was HK$853.7 billion, representing a year-on-year increase of 4.8%. The total income of local residents in the third quarter of 2025 was HK$54.5 billion higher than the local production value, equivalent to 6.4% of the GDP, mainly due to net inflows of investment returns. After adjusting for the impact of price changes, the total income of local residents in Hong Kong in the third quarter of 2025 increased by 0.2% in real terms compared to the same period in the previous year, while the GDP increased by 3.8% in real terms in the same quarter. The total inflow of primary earnings (mainly investment returns) in Hong Kong in the third quarter of 2025 was HK$576.1 billion, a decrease of 7.4% from the same period in the previous year, equivalent to 67.5% of the GDP for the quarter. At the same time, the total outflow of primary earnings in the third quarter of 2025 also decreased by 3.8% from the same period in the previous year to HK$521.5 billion, equivalent to 61.1% of the GDP for the quarter. In terms of the major components of investment income inflows, direct investment income decreased by 4.9% from the same period in the previous year, mainly due to a decrease in direct investment income from local large enterprises abroad. Securities investment income recorded a significant decrease of 10.6% from the same period in the previous year, mainly due to a decrease in dividend income from non-local equity securities obtained by local investors. In terms of the major components of investment income outflows, direct investment income decreased by 4.1% from the same period in the previous year, mainly due to a decrease in direct investment income from large multinational enterprises in the local area. Securities investment income increased by 7.6%, mainly due to an increase in interest income from local debt securities obtained by non-local investors and an increase in dividend income from local equity securities obtained by non-local investors. In terms of country/region analysis, in the third quarter of 2025, mainland China continued to be the major source of total inflows of primary earnings in Hong Kong, accounting for 40.7% of the total inflows for the quarter. This was followed by the British Virgin Islands at 16.0%. In terms of total outflows of primary earnings, mainland China and the British Virgin Islands remained the main destinations in the third quarter of 2025, accounting for 36.0% and 18.4% respectively of the total outflows for the quarter.
