Implanting a "super brain" for Siri! It is rumored that Apple Inc. (AAPL.US) plans to purchase Alphabet Inc. Class C (GOOGL.US) Gemini with an annual fee of 1 billion dollars as a transitional plan.
According to informed sources, Apple plans to pay about $1 billion annually to acquire a super high-performance artificial intelligence (AI) model developed by Google. The model has parameters of up to 1.2 trillion and will be used to fulfill Apple's long-delayed promise to restructure the underlying technology of Siri voice assistant.
According to informed sources, Apple Inc. plans to pay approximately $1 billion annually to acquire a super high-performance artificial intelligence (AI) model developed by Alphabet Inc. Class C. The model has 1.2 trillion parameters and will be used to fulfill Apple Inc.'s long-delayed promise to restructure the underlying technology of the Siri voice assistant.
The sources stated that after lengthy evaluation, the two parties are currently finalizing the agreement. This move means that Apple Inc. will use Alphabet Inc. Class C technology to rebuild the core architecture of Siri, paving the way for the launch of a new generation of features next year. The 1.2 trillion parameters of the Alphabet Inc. Class C model, a key indicator of the complexity of AI software, will far exceed the scale of Apple Inc.'s current model.
According to previous reports, Apple Inc. evaluated multiple third-party models and after testing Alphabet Inc. Class C Gemini, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Anthropic's Claude, they locked in a cooperation with Alphabet Inc. Class C earlier this year. Apple Inc.'s idea is to use Alphabet Inc. Class C's technology as a transitional solution until Apple Inc.'s self-developed models are competitive enough.
It is disclosed that the new version of Siri is expected to debut in the spring next year. Since there are still several months until the official release, there are variables in the plans and cooperation details. Both Apple Inc. and Alphabet Inc. Class C spokespeople declined to comment.
Analysts stated that the custom Gemini system represents a major technological leap - its parameter scale far surpasses the 150 billion parameter model supporting Apple Intelligence cloud services, significantly enhancing the system's ability to process complex data and understand context.
The Siri transformation plan, codenamed "Glenwood," is led by Vision Pro head-mounted display development manager Mike Rockwell and software engineering director Craig Federighi. The plan will be integrated into the new version of the voice assistant for iOS 26.4, codenamed "Linwood."
According to the agreement, the Gemini model will drive Siri's summary generation and task planning functions, assisting the voice assistant in integrating information and deciding complex task execution processes. Some Siri functions will continue to use Apple Inc.'s self-developed models.
The model will run on Apple Inc.'s private cloud servers, ensuring complete isolation of user data from Alphabet Inc. Class C infrastructure. Apple Inc. has configured dedicated AI server hardware to provide computational support for the model.
Although the scale of this collaboration is considerable, both parties are not expected to publicly promote it. Alphabet Inc. Class C will serve as a behind-the-scenes technology provider, which is different from the cooperation model of setting Alphabet Inc. Class C as the default search engine in the Safari browser.
The current agreement also differs from earlier negotiations to directly integrate Gemini into Siri from the chatting Siasun Robot & Automation - a concept that was almost finalized in 2024 and earlier this year but ultimately did not materialize. The cooperation also does not involve embedding Alphabet Inc. Class C AI search functions into Apple Inc.'s operating system.
During the latest earnings conference call, Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook revealed that Siri may introduce other chatting Siasun Robot & Automation options in addition to ChatGPT in the future.
Apple Inc. is not the only company using Gemini to power AI functions - several giants like Snap are developing features based on Alphabet Inc. Class C Vertex AI platform. However, for Apple Inc., this move acknowledges its lag in the field of AI and demonstrates a willingness to catch up using external technology.
However, informed sources stated that Apple Inc. has always viewed Gemini as a temporary solution. Despite facing AI talent attrition (including the head of the model team), management continues to insist on developing its own AI technology in hopes of eventually replacing Gemini.
To this end, Apple Inc.'s model team is accelerating the development of trillion-parameter-level cloud models, aiming to launch them for commercial use as early as next year. The company's executives believe that this model is expected to reach the level of the custom Gemini version, but Alphabet Inc. Class C's continuous iteration of Gemini poses challenges on the catching-up journey. Currently, Gemini 2.5 Pro ranks first in most large language model evaluations.
At the same time, Apple Inc. is actively promoting Apple Intelligence and the new version of Siri in the Chinese market. Due to long-term restrictions on Alphabet Inc. Class C services, the Chinese version of the Siri reconstruction plan may abandon the Gemini technology route.
Earlier this year, reports indicated that the Chinese version of Apple Intelligence will use self-developed models in conjunction with a content filtering layer developed by Alibaba Group Holding Limited Sponsored ADR to adjust output content according to regulatory requirements. Apple Inc. is also considering collaborating with Baidu Inc Sponsored ADR Class A on domestic AI services.
