"Silver Fox" joins the ranks of the "migratory birds", with a significant increase in the growth rate of air and hotel bookings compared to last year.
In recent times, many provinces and cities across the country have entered into an early "deep freeze" mode. The sudden drop in temperature has also prompted a large number of migratory populations to start their journey early. According to TONGCHENGTRAVEL data, bookings for products to escape the cold usually start in mid-November, but this year, the search and booking activity for "migratory" routes has significantly increased from mid to late October, with ticket bookings for flights to Hainan, Yunnan, Guangxi and other warm destinations increasing by about twice compared to last year from October 18 to November 10.
After getting enough of traditional winter destinations, the "migratory" people are looking for more novelty and surprises. On the TONGCHENGTRAVEL platform, in addition to popular winter destinations such as Sanya, Haikou, Kunming, Xishuangbanna, Beihai, and Xiamen, some lesser-known cities have caught the attention of users, with increased search and interest levels in places like Yunnan Jianshui, Yunnan Yuanjiang, Guangxi Bama, and Guangxi Chongzuo.
Interestingly, under the trend of upgrading quality consumption, the footsteps of the "migratory" population have also crossed to the southern hemisphere. Oceania in the southern hemisphere is currently in the spring/summer season with pleasant weather, and on the TONGCHENGTRAVEL platform, the booking popularity for outbound trips to Australia, New Zealand, and other countries has rapidly increased, with high-end travel becoming one of the highlights of the "migratory" population's migration.
"New migratory birds" joining the migration army
Among the entire migratory population, the three northeastern provinces remain the absolute main source of tourists, with flights from the northeast to Hainan landing one after another in the fall and winter.
TONGCHENGTRAVEL data shows that in the past three weeks, flight search and booking activity for tickets from Harbin to Sanya, Shenyang to Sanya, and Changchun to Haikou have firmly occupied the top three spots. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region follows closely behind, with high ticket booking activity for routes like Beijing to Sanya, and Beijing to Haikou.
As a large number of people in their fifties and sixties head to the warm south for the winter, the "new silver-haired" group of the seventies, who have crossed the age threshold of 55, have quietly joined the migration army.
On the TONGCHENGTRAVEL platform, the booking orders for flights, hotels, and entrance tickets for attractions from the south, among travelers aged 50 to 60, have seen a significant increase compared to last year. They are relatively more tech-savvy and more willing to try out new destinations and activities.
"Can you guess? The proposal I submitted to my boss yesterday was written while wearing a short-sleeved shirt, drinking coconut water under the blue sky and sea in Wanning," said Chengcheng (pseudonym) mysteriously while chatting with colleagues on WeChat. Working flexibly from home, this year Chengcheng decided to move her workplace to the seaside in Wanning, combining work and holiday.
In recent years, many young people like Chengcheng have become "new migratory birds." TONGCHENGTRAVEL data shows that young "migratory birds" often spend their money wisely: focusing on economically advantageous transportation bookings, they are 25% more likely to choose early morning or late-night flights for their tickets from the south. They tend to spend more on accommodation, preferring newer, more high-tech hotels or homestays.
Quality long-term rental homestays and hotels are in demand
When heading south to escape the cold, the "migratory" population typically stays for a few weeks to a few months, making living arrangements a key consideration. Overall, accommodation choices are becoming increasingly qualitative and star ratings are gradually rising.
On one hand, some silver-haired individuals in their fifties and sixties have retirement pensions and their children have a certain economic foundation, making them more willing to pay for quality accommodations. On the other hand, young "migratory" individuals who are tired of standardized chain hotels are starting to look for homestays that are well-designed and exude a sense of escape from the world.
Considering the age-appropriate facilities and meticulous services, the silver-haired group prefers to stay in hotels or hotel-style apartments. TONGCHENGTRAVEL data shows that the proportion of silver-haired individuals in long-term hotel bookings from November to February is significantly higher compared to other customer groups, and they prefer quality mid to high-star hotels, with average accommodation spending being around 30% higher than that of younger groups.
Young people, on the other hand, enjoy spending time in homestays, lounging and enjoying the surroundings. On the TONGCHENGTRAVEL platform, bookings for homestays in places like Yunnan and Hainan have seen a rapid increase in orders from travelers aged 25 to 30, with average stays extending from two to three weeks to over a month. Moreover, the price range of homestays chosen by young people has increased compared to previous years.
A key aspect of wintering down south is travel, and every year the migration of "migratory" individuals brings a wave of increased traffic to many tourist attractions.
TONGCHENGTRAVEL's Wanning Yalong Bay Rainforest Cultural Tourism Area (referred to as "Yanoda") is a national 5A-level tourist attraction. Starting in November each year, Yanoda enters the super comfortable period for rainforest exploration. This autumn and winter season, Yanoda has specially planned a tropical rainforest exploration tour for the "migratory" individuals fleeing south for the winter, which includes adventurous hiking routes through the tropical rainforest, fun visits to the rainforest botanical gardens, and exciting rides in the rainforest amusement park. Targeting student groups, Yanoda has launched a rainforest healing study tour, featuring courses such as the Eight Section Brocade Qi Gong in the tropical rainforest, exploring the rainforest flora and fauna, creative handcraft lessons using plant specimens, and experiencing southern medicinal herbs. For the silver-haired group, Yanoda has introduced a tropical rainforest wellness trip, with experiences including ethnic clothing photo shoots, intangible cultural heritage handicraft experiences, medicinal herb wellness experiences, and rainforest-themed health meals.
