On October 31, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority released the latest survey results for negative equity residential mortgage loans at the end of the third quarter of 2025. The data shows that the number of negative equity residential mortgage loans in Hong Kong at the end of the third quarter of 2025 was 31,449, compared to 37,806 at the end of the second quarter of 2025. These cases mainly involve housing mortgage loans for bank employees or mortgage insurance plans, and these types of loans typically have higher loan-to-value ratios. In terms of amount, the amount involved in negative equity residential mortgage loans decreased from 190.2 billion Hong Kong dollars at the end of the second quarter of 2025 to 156.8 billion Hong Kong dollars at the end of the third quarter of 2025. The amount of unsecured portion in negative equity residential mortgage loans decreased from 14.3 billion Hong Kong dollars at the end of the second quarter of 2025 to 10.9 billion Hong Kong dollars at the end of the third quarter of 2025. The delinquency rate for negative equity residential mortgage loans overdue for more than three months at the end of the third quarter of 2025 was 0.24%, compared to 0.21% at the end of the second quarter of 2025, remaining at a low level.
