A senior executive from Toyota Motors said on Wednesday that the company did not make a firm commitment to invest an additional $10 billion in the United States. The day before, President Trump mentioned this potential investment amount.
A senior executive from Toyota Motor Corp. Sponsored ADR (TM.US) stated on Wednesday that the company has not explicitly promised to invest an additional $10 billion in the United States. The day before, U.S. President Trump had mentioned this potential investment size. During his visit to Japan on Tuesday evening, Trump mentioned that the world's largest car manufacturer is considering investing around $10 billion in the United States. However, Toyota executive Hiroyuki Ueda said that there was no explicit commitment made during the discussions with the Japanese government and the U.S. embassy prior to Trump's visit to Japan regarding the investment amount mentioned above. He added that Toyota will continue to invest in the U.S. and create job opportunities. "During Trump's first term, Toyota's investment in the U.S. was around $10 billion. While we did not mention an equivalent investment this time, we did indicate that we will continue to invest and create jobs, as we have done in the past. Therefore, Trump's mention of a $10 billion investment is likely based on this context," Ueda said during the Tokyo Motor Show. "So, we have never explicitly stated that we will invest $10 billion in the coming years." Ueda also pointed out that during an event at the U.S. embassy on Tuesday evening, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda briefly spoke with Trump but did not discuss investment-related topics.
