Macau: CPI in September increases by 0.47% year-on-year and 0.1% month-on-month.
In September 2025, Macao's comprehensive consumer price index increased by 0.47% year-on-year and by 0.10% month-on-month.
According to data from the Statistics and Census Service of Macao, the Composite Consumer Price Index (CPI) in September 2025 increased by 0.47% year-on-year and by 0.10% month-on-month. Over the twelve months ending in September of this year, the average CPI increased by 0.24% compared to the same period a year ago (from October 2023 to September 2024).
Compared to the same month last year, the price index for Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages increased by 0.56%, mainly driven by dining out and takeaway charges, as well as rising rental prices for housing. Among the major categories, there was a more significant year-on-year increase in Recreation, Sports, and Culture (+2.81%). On the other hand, the price indices for Information and Communication (-2.94%) and Clothing and Footwear (-1.43%) decreased. Class A and Class B CPI increased by 0.39% and 0.53% respectively year-on-year.
In September, the CPI increased by 0.10% month-on-month. The price index for Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages rose by 0.23% compared to the previous month, mainly due to increased prices of vegetables, dining out, and takeaway charges. Education (+0.94%) and Miscellaneous Goods and Services (including personal care, insurance, and jewelry and watches, +0.74%) also saw increases. On the other hand, tour group charges, hotel room rates, and airfare prices fell after the summer vacation, leading to a decrease in the price index for Recreation, Sports, and Culture (-0.64%) and Transportation (-0.56%). Class A and Class B CPI increased by 0.11% and 0.10% respectively month-on-month.
Over the twelve months ending in September of this year, the average CPI increased by 0.24% compared to the same period a year ago. Among the major categories, the largest increases were recorded in Miscellaneous Goods and Services (+2.07%), Recreation, Sports, and Culture (+1.47%), and Education (+1.08%), while the price indices for Information and Communication (-2.32%) and Transportation (-2.24%) decreased. Class A and Class B CPI increased by 0.19% and 0.27% respectively.
In the third quarter, the average CPI increased by 0.29% year-on-year, with Class A and Class B CPI increasing by 0.22% and 0.34% respectively. Compared to the second quarter, the average CPI increased by 0.23%.
In the first nine months of this year, the average CPI increased by 0.22% year-on-year; Class A and Class B CPI increased by 0.17% and 0.26% respectively.
The Statistics and Census Service of Macao has compiled three series of CPI to reflect the impact of changes in prices of goods/services on households in different expenditure groups. Class A and Class B CPI cover approximately 50% and 30% of households with average monthly expenditures ranging from 11,000 to 35,999 Macau Patacas and 36,000 to 71,999 Macau Patacas, respectively. The Composite CPI covers all households mentioned above; with a higher proportion of expenditures on Housing and Fuel, Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages, and Transportation, accounting for 34.47, 29.47, and 8.33 percent, respectively.
