The latest research shows that by 2025, global music publishing revenue will surpass $10 billion for the first time. In addition, this revenue is expected to continue to grow over the next five years. By 2029, total revenue is projected to exceed $13 billion for the first time, reaching a milestone of $14 billion the following year.
In line with the trend of streaming driving growth in recorded music sales, the music publishing industry is also benefiting from the continued improvement in "accessibility." Streaming has become the largest source of revenue for music publishers, with services such as Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music expected to contribute an increasing share of revenue throughout the forecast period.
Omdia forecasts that global music publishing revenue will achieve a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.4% over the next five years, reaching $140.4 billion at the end of the forecast period. The CAGR for digital music revenue is forecast to be 6.7%, with total digital music revenue expected to surpass $8 billion by 2029 and rise to $8.67 billion the following year.
Given the close relationship between music publishing and recorded music, their development trends over the next five years are closely linked. However, it is expected that at the end of the forecast period, the growth rate of music publishing revenue will be higher than that of recorded music. Omdia's data shows that music publishing revenue will grow by 3.7% in 2030, while recorded music will increase by 2.3%. The share of music publishing in the total revenue is expected to reach 21% in 2030, higher than the previous year's 20.8% and 18.9% in 2024.

Simon Dyson, Senior Chief Analyst at Omdia, said: "The music publishing industry is currently in a period of rapid development, and this momentum has been ongoing for several years. Although the slowdown in music streaming growth is inevitable and will limit future revenue growth for publishers, the industry is still expected to achieve new revenue milestones in the coming years. In the long term, its growth prospects remain very optimistic."
