Importance analysis
Despite facing challenges such as economic uncertainty and tariff fluctuations, smartphone demand continues to show resilience. High-end features, competitive pricing models, and promotions such as trade-in programs have made the majority of consumers eagerly choose to upgrade their devices.
Key remarks
Nabila Popal, Senior Research Director of IDC's Global Client Devices Department, said: "The smartphone industry continues to show steady growth and achieved remarkable progress in the face of ongoing economic uncertainty and tariff instability."
Fran Jeronimo, Vice President of IDC's Client Devices Department, said: "Demand for the new iPhone 17 series from Apple Inc. is strong, with pre-sales exceeding the previous generation. At the same time, the performance of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 surpasses all previous foldable models, injecting new vitality into the foldable screen product field."
Data overview
IDC points out that global smartphone shipments reached 322.7 million units in the third quarter. Apple Inc. (AAPL.US) achieved its best performance in history in the quarter ending in September, while Samsung Electronics achieved its strongest growth in the third quarter ever.
Samsung remained at the top with a shipment volume of 61.4 million units in the quarter, while Apple Inc. shipped 58.6 million units, a nearly 3% year-on-year increase.
Future outlook
IDC stated that it maintains an optimistic outlook for the remainder of 2025. With strong promotional activities, continued expansion of AI capabilities, and ongoing device innovation driving sales, smartphone sales at the end of the year are expected to experience strong growth.
