The head of the Department of Trade in Services of the Ministry of Commerce introduced the development of service trade in January-August 2025. According to the disclosure, from January to August 2025, China's service trade grew steadily, with the total volume of service imports and exports reaching 5.24769 trillion yuan (RMB), a year-on-year increase of 7.4%. Among them, exports amounted to 2.30044 trillion yuan, an increase of 14.7%; imports amounted to 2.94725 trillion yuan, an increase of 2.3%. The service trade deficit was 646.81 billion yuan, a decrease of 228.07 billion yuan compared to the same period last year.
Intensive knowledge-based service trade continued to grow. From January to August, the trade volume of knowledge-intensive services reached 2.02507 trillion yuan, an increase of 6.7%. Among them, the trade volume of other business services, telecommunications, computer and information services reached 854.72 billion yuan, 713.1 billion yuan, with growth rates of 3.6% and 10.8% respectively. The export of knowledge-intensive services was 1.1784 trillion yuan, an increase of 9.4%; the import of knowledge-intensive services was 846.67 billion yuan, an increase of 3.2%; with a surplus of 331.73 billion yuan, an increase of 74.7 billion yuan compared to the same period last year.
Export of travel services grew the fastest. From January to August, the export of travel services grew rapidly, reaching 1.44818 trillion yuan in imports and exports, an increase of 8.6%. Among them, exports increased by 57.6% and imports increased by 2.3%.
