Microsoft Corporation (MSFT.US) announced on Friday that it will increase the suggested retail prices for multiple Xbox game consoles in the U.S. market starting in October, citing "macroeconomic environment changes." In a statement on its official website, Microsoft Corporation pointed out that this price adjustment only applies to console products and does not include accessories such as controllers and headsets, with prices in other countries remaining unchanged. While Microsoft Corporation did not directly mention tariffs in the announcement, it is widely believed that this move may be related to recent tariff policies implemented by the Trump administration. In the past few months, many consumer goods companies have issued price increase warnings, attributing the higher costs to changes in U.S. trade policies. President Trump has imposed tariffs on several countries this year in an effort to bring more manufacturing back to the U.S. Microsoft Corporation stated, "We understand that these adjustments may pose challenges to users, but this decision was made after careful consideration." This is the second time this year that Microsoft Corporation has raised the prices of Xbox consoles in the U.S. market. Meanwhile, competitors Sony and Nintendo have also raised prices for their console products following the implementation of Trump's tariff policies. According to a PDF file published on Microsoft Corporation's official website, the price for the standard version of the Xbox Series S has been raised from $379 to $399, while the 1TB storage version is priced at $449. The digital version of the Xbox Series X has increased by $50 to $599, and the disc drive version has also gone up by $50 to $649. The price for the top-of-the-line 2TB edition has been raised from $729 to $799. Industry experts point out that in the backdrop of rising inflation pressure and general price increases for consumer goods in the U.S., this round of price adjustments may further intensify competition in the gaming hardware market and test the purchasing power of consumers.
