On September 19, Hong Kong International Airport announced that in August 2025, the airport saw a total of 5.68 million passengers and 34,840 flight movements, representing a year-on-year increase of 15.8% and 10.2% respectively. The passenger volume also reached a new high for a single day since the pandemic. The increase in air traffic in August was mainly driven by the recovery of travel demand to and from Japan, as well as continued growth in travel to and from Mainland China and other destinations.
During the summer vacation period, the single-day passenger volume on August 10 exceeded 200,000, marking the peak and setting a new record for the single-day passenger volume post-pandemic. The highest daily passenger volume record at the airport does not include days when additional passenger volume was added due to flight adjustments caused by adverse weather conditions.
Cargo volume in August increased by 5.6% year-on-year to 429,000 metric tons, mainly driven by sustained cargo demand to and from Europe and the Middle East, offsetting the decline in cargo volume to and from North America. The growth in cargo volume was also driven by a 13.5% increase in transshipment cargo volume.
In the first eight months of the year, passenger volume and flight movements increased by 15.4% and 9.9% year-on-year to 40.3 million passengers and 260,830 flight movements respectively. Cargo volume increased by 2.6% year-on-year to 3.3 million metric tons.
Over the past 12 months, passenger volume increased by 16.7% year-on-year to 58.4 million passengers; flight movements increased by 11.9% to 386,655, while cargo volume increased by 5.0% year-on-year to 5 million metric tons.
