Nvidia plans to collaborate with multiple venture capital firms to invest 2 billion to support the artificial intelligence industry in the UK.
NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA.US) plans to collaborate with multiple venture capital firms to invest 2 billion ( $2.7 billion) to support the development of the UK artificial intelligence industry. NVIDIA Corporation released a statement saying that they will invest new funds to help "empower the UK to compete in the global artificial intelligence market" and will collaborate with venture capital firms including Accel, Air Street Capital, Balderton Capital, Hoxton Ventures, and Phoenix Court. NVIDIA Corporation CEO Jensen Huang announced at an event in London that they plan to invest in autonomous driving technology developer Wayve and Oxa, fintech company Revolut, as well as AI companies PolyAI, Synthesia, Latent Labs, and Basecamp Research. Wayve separately announced on Thursday that NVIDIA Corporation will invest $500 million in them to accelerate the development and deployment of AI models. According to a spokesperson, the total 2 billion investment also includes NVIDIA Corporation's 500 million equity investment in UK AI data center company Nscale announced on Wednesday, with funds coming from NVIDIA Corporation's balance sheet. NVIDIA Corporation stated that their investment will be "registered in the US and activated in the UK", providing funding and computing power support to researchers and startups. A spokesperson mentioned that UK venture capital partners will assist chip manufacturers in identifying AI startups worth supporting, although they may not necessarily co-invest. "The UK is at a golden moment, where world-class universities, bold startups, top researchers, and cutting-edge supercomputing technologies converge," Huang said in the statement. "Investing in the UK is timely." NVIDIA Corporation's funding plan is one of several AI investments announced by US tech companies this week during President Trump's visit to the UK. Microsoft Corporation and OpenAI also announced billion-pound investment and collaboration plans in the UK. The chip manufacturer stated that their investment will help UK AI startups overcome market constraints such as access to supercomputing resources, rising energy costs, and funding shortages. The UK is not only home to Alphabet Inc. Class C's AI division DeepMind, but has also nurtured well-known AI startups like Wayve. Although it is Europe's largest startup market by trading volume and scale, it has yet to produce national AI giants like US-based OpenAI or France's Mistral. Accel, Balderton Capital, Hoxton, and Phoenix Court are among London's most active renowned funds, having invested in UK AI startups like Synthesia. Air Street Capital is a smaller fund supported by Spotify founder Daniel Ek, focusing on AI and biotech companies. Huang is one of the Silicon Valley leaders accompanying Trump's visit, and after announcing the investment in Nscale, he attended a banquet at Windsor Castle with King Charles III on Wednesday. This little-known startup, spun off from a cryptocurrency mining company 14 months ago, has also collaborated with NVIDIA Corporation and OpenAI on the "UK Stargate" project - a branch of a larger project to enhance the capabilities of AI systems in the US. These statements reinforce UK Prime Minister Stammer's efforts to strengthen UK-US relations and promote technological development. Stammer called NVIDIA Corporation's investment a "major vote of confidence in the present and future of the UK". In January of this year, the UK Prime Minister outlined plans to "accelerate AI development" by investing in data centers and chips. He also called for the establishment of "AI Growth Zones" to enable data centers to receive fast planning approval and grid access rights.
