On September 17, the Statistics and Census Service of Macao revealed that in 2024, with the steady resumption of tourism activities, the industry gradually recovered, and both industry revenue and expenses increased accordingly.
On September 17, the Statistics and Census Service of Macao released the data of the 2024 gambling industry survey, showing that with the steady recovery of tourism activities, the industry as a whole is gradually recovering, with both revenue and expenditure increasing accordingly. The total revenue for the year (including gambling and other income) increased by 23.1% year-on-year to MOP 231.45 billion. Total expenditure (excluding taxes) recorded a 18.0% increase to MOP 94.37 billion. Within total expenditure, operating expenses (MOP 40.58 billion) and purchases, commissions, and customer incentives (MOP 23.20 billion) both increased by 28.0% year-on-year, while employee expenses (MOP 21.48 billion) also rose by 7.0%. On the other hand, non-operating expenses including interest and depreciation decreased by 9.6% year-on-year to MOP 9.10 billion. Among operating expenses, expenses on free hotel rooms, dining, and other goods and services provided to customers (MOP 25.58 billion) increased by 31.1% year-on-year, while management services and services provided by third parties (MOP 6.99 billion) and market research and promotional activities (MOP 2.67 billion) also increased by 29.4% and 28.0% respectively. Industry profit before tax increased by 24.7% year-on-year to MOP 143.12 billion. According to the data, the gambling industry survey mainly collects statistical data related to gambling activities from enterprises. In 2024, there were a total of 9 enterprises operating gambling activities, with one ceasing operations during the reference year. There were 6 licensed lucky gambling enterprises and 2 lottery-operating enterprises at the end of the period. Data on hotel and retail businesses operated within these enterprises are not included.
