SensorTower: From 2025 to now, the number of PC/console game downloads has exceeded 1 billion times. Steam platform is expected to exceed $12 billion in annual revenue.

On September 17th, SensorTower stated that by 2025, PC/console game downloads have exceeded 1 billion times, with Steam occupying the largest market share on the PC platform. PlayStation closely follows, while Xbox still holds a considerable market share. Not only is Steam leading in user acquisition, but it is also expected to break revenue records. Compared to the same period in 2024, game purchase revenue on the platform has increased by 15% in 2025 so far, with a potential year-end breakthrough of $12 billion. In terms of popular game genres, core classic types are still the first choice for PC/console players. From the perspective of download volume alone, action games (2.62 billion times), shooting games (1.89 billion times), and role-playing games (1.31 billion times) have performed the best in 2025 so far. Electronic Arts Inc. (EA.US) is currently the highest-ranking publisher in terms of download volume, thanks to the success of sports, IP game series, and collaborative games like "Split Fiction" and "It Takes Two" in the EA Originals project. Microsoft Corporation (MSFT.US) and Sony (SONY.US) rank 2nd and 3rd, respectively, with both occupying the market with their PC/console game series lineup. Upon closer inspection, we find that Sony's content performs better on PlayStation, while Microsoft Corporation's content is more popular on Xbox. Microsoft Corporation's games on the Xbox platform have a large download volume, partly due to deep integration with Game Pass. The rest of the list includes both common popular games and new faces. Netease Inc Sponsored ADR (09999) with "Marvel Rivals" is the most downloaded PC/console game this year, while Kepler Interactive has gained significant influence with the popular AA games "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" and "REMATCH". Microsoft Corporation's outstanding performance this year is mainly due to the acquisition of the "Call of Duty" and "Minecraft" series, both popular cross-platform games. On the PC/console platform, Bethesda Softworks and Xbox Game Studios account for the majority of downloads, while King's mobile platform downloads make up over half. In the AAA game field, sports games such as "EA SPORTS FC 25" and "NBA 2K25" continue to dominate the market, while action role-playing game "Monster Hunter Wilds" also shows strong performance. In AA games, "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" is the clear winner and has received unanimous praise in the gaming community. The turn-based role-playing game's download volume even surpasses that of "NBA 2K25". In the independent game sector, "R.E.P.O." has the highest sales, in line with its phenomenal popularity in the content creation and social circles. However, the second highest-ranking independent game, "Schedule I", has achieved a similarly impressive download performance at double the price.
