Li Chenggang, deputy minister of the International Department of the Ministry of Commerce of China, said on the 15th that in the past two days, China and the United States held talks in Madrid, Spain. Both sides actively implemented the important consensus reached in the phone call between the leaders of China and the United States, fully utilized the role of the China-US economic and trade consultation mechanism, and had candid, in-depth, and constructive communication on economic and trade issues of concern to both sides on the basis of mutual respect and equal consultation.
Li Chenggang stated that, regarding the TikTok issue, China has always been opposed to politicizing, instrumentalizing, or weaponizing technology and economic issues, and will never seek any agreement at the expense of principles, the interests of enterprises, and international fairness and justice. China will resolutely safeguard national interests and the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises, and conduct technology export approvals in accordance with laws and regulations. At the same time, the Chinese government fully respects the will of enterprises and supports enterprises in conducting equal business negotiations based on market principles.
Li Chenggang also stated that during this meeting, both parties had candid and in-depth exchanges on TikTok and related concerns of the Chinese side, and reached a basic framework consensus on resolving TikTok-related issues in a cooperative manner, reducing investment barriers, and promoting relevant economic and trade cooperation.
