Amazon has launched Chevrolet BrightDrop electric delivery trucks as a test for its delivery fleet.
Amazon.com, Inc. has started testing Chevrolet BrightDrop electric delivery vans as part of its delivery fleet, and the news of the test has put pressure on Rivian's stock price. The e-commerce giant has confirmed that as part of its plan to have 100,000 electric delivery vans on the road by 2030, the company is evaluating other supplier options besides the existing Rivian delivery vans, indicating that Amazon.com, Inc. may be seeking supply chain diversification rather than solely relying on Rivian. Looking back at the collaboration background, Amazon.com, Inc. reached an agreement with Rivian in September 2019 to purchase 100,000 electric delivery vans and pledged a "significant" investment in the latter. However, as of now, Rivian has only delivered 30,000 vans, and Rivian's CEO expects production to significantly increase by 2026-2027. To make up for the quantity gap, Amazon.com, Inc. is testing products from various automotive companies including General Motors Company, Ford, Stellantis, and Mercedes-Benz. For General Motors Company, winning an order from Amazon.com, Inc. would be a boost for its early-stage commercial electric vehicle business. The company integrated the BrightDrop division into the General Motors Company Evolve division last year, which focuses on supplying vehicles to corporate and government fleet customers. With a range of 272 miles, the BrightDrop electric delivery vans have been adopted by FedEx Corporation and multiple public sector fleet customers, and this cooperation with Amazon.com, Inc. could further expand its market applications.
