Elon Musk's brain-machine implant company Neuralink is collaborating with research institutions in California and Spain to advance a clinical study on a visual prosthesis. The trial, led by the University of California, Santa Barbara, was announced at the end of July on the US government's ClinicalTrials.gov platform.
According to the research plan, the project aims to "address key scientific issues in the development of intelligent bionic eyes." Researchers say that this device, which integrates artificial intelligence (AI) technology, will help visually impaired individuals with functions such as facial recognition, outdoor navigation, and text reading.
The specific role of Neuralink in the trial is not yet clear. The research description mentions that patient data from Neuralink will be introduced "when conditions are mature." According to the announcement, the trial is currently recruiting participants by invitation only. As of the time of writing, neither the University of California, Santa Barbara, nor Neuralink has responded to requests for comments.
Neuralink is developing "Blindsight" brain-machine chip technology, which aims not only to help blind individuals regain sight but also to provide users with enhanced visual capabilities beyond those of normal vision. The technology has been tested on primates but has not yet been tested on humans.
Reports indicate that Musk's company plans to commercialize the "Blindsight" technology by 2030. By 2031, the company aims to achieve annual revenue of $1 billion through at least three different types of brain-machine implant devices.
