According to informed sources, Berne Optical is considering restarting its initial public offering (IPO) plan in Hong Kong. The sources said that the company has had preliminary discussions with advisors to help prepare for the IPO. Berne Optical may seek to submit documents to the HKEX as early as this year. According to the HKEX disclosure on January 31, 2022, Berne Optical submitted a second listing application to the main board of the HKEX, with JP Morgan, HSBC, and CICC as joint sponsors. Both the IPO prospectuses for the company's Hong Kong listing submitted on July 30, 2021 and the second submission have expired.
The sources added that the current consideration is still in the early stages, and Berne Optical may decide not to continue with the IPO. A representative of Berne Optical declined to comment on this.
According to Frost & Sullivan data, in terms of shipment value in 2020, Berne Optical ranked first among providers of smart device exterior structures and module solutions, with a market share of 17.6%. The company was also the first company in the world to provide a phone glass cover solution (2004), provide a smartphone 3D glass cover (2013), provide a foldable smartphone CPI film cover solution (2019), and provide a smartphone microcrystalline glass cover solution (2020). According to Frost & Sullivan data, the company was one of the first companies to start planning and producing car glass for internal decoration and other new applications (such as LIDAR and ARHUD). The company started developing automotive panel solutions in 2015.
In terms of finances, as of the financial years ended on March 31, 2019, 2020, 2021, and the 6 months ended on September 30, 2021, Berne Optical's revenues were approximately HK$31.622 billion, HK$27.463 billion, HK$29.913 billion, and HK$15.016 billion respectively. The gross profits during these periods were HK$7.016 billion, HK$6.863 billion, HK$8.126 billion, and HK$4.115 billion respectively.
