Macau's overall consumer price index in May rose by 0.19% year-on-year and decreased by 0.05% month-on-month.

According to data from the Statistics and Census Service of Macao, the overall consumer price index in May 2025 increased by 0.19% year-on-year, but fell by 0.05% month-on-month.
According to data from the Statistics and Census Bureau of Macao, the composite consumer price index in May 2025 increased by 0.19% year-on-year, but decreased by 0.05% month-on-month. Over the twelve months up to May of this year, the average composite consumer price index increased by 0.38% compared to the same period a year ago (from June 2023 to May 2024). Compared to the same month last year, the price index of food and non-alcoholic beverages, which is of particular concern to the general public, increased by 0.21%, mainly driven by the increase in dining out and takeaway charges, as well as the rise in housing rent, leading to a 0.13% increase in the housing and fuel category. The recreation, sports, and culture category recorded a significant year-on-year increase of 4.14%. On the other hand, the information and communication (-3.09%) and clothing and footwear (-2.47%) categories declined. The price index of class A and class B consumer goods increased by 0.13% and 0.25% respectively. Compared to April, the composite consumer price index in May decreased by 0.05%. The price index of food and non-alcoholic beverages (-0.03%) decreased month-on-month, mainly due to the decrease in prices of fruits, fresh fish, seafood, edible oil, and vegetables. Airfare and hotel room rates fell after the Easter holidays, as well as a decrease in tour group charges, leading to declines in the transport (-0.56%) and recreation, sports, and culture (-0.42%) categories. The price index of clothing and footwear (+0.71%) and household equipment and services (+0.28%) categories increased month-on-month. The price index of class A and class B consumer goods decreased by 0.04% and 0.06% respectively. Over the twelve months up to May of this year, the average composite consumer price index increased by 0.38% compared to the same period a year ago. Among the various price indices, the categories with the largest increases are miscellaneous goods and services (including personal care, insurance, and jewelry and watches, +2.41%), education (+1.9%), and medical care (+1.44%), while the prices of transport (-2.87%) and information and communication (-1.34%) categories declined. The average price index of class A and class B consumer goods increased by 0.35% and 0.39% respectively. The average composite consumer price index in the first five months of this year increased by 0.17% year-on-year, with the food and non-alcoholic beverages category increasing by 0.55%. The average price index of class A and class B consumer goods increased by 0.13% and 0.2% respectively.
