The U.S. Department of Commerce announced it will impose 50% tariffs on various steel household appliances—including dishwashers, washing machines, and refrigerators—starting June 23.

On June 12 local time, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced it will impose tariffs on various steel household appliances—such as dishwashers, washing machines, and refrigerators—starting June 23. These products are classified as "derivative steel products," and most countries will be subject to a 50% tariff, potentially leading to increased consumer prices. Industry stakeholders are closely observing the development.

This move follows a statement issued by the White House on June 3, in which President Trump declared an increase in tariffs on imported steel, aluminum, and related derivative products from 25% to 50%, effective from 00:01 AM ET on June 4, 2025.

According to the executive order titled Adjustment of Imports of Steel and Aluminum Articles into the United States, national security was cited as the primary reason for the tariff adjustment.
Previously, on February 10, Trump signed an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports to the U.S., which officially took effect on March 12 local time.
Data from the U.S. International Trade Commission shows that the U.S. imported $147.3 billion worth of steel and aluminum products in 2024. Key sources for steel imports include Canada, Mexico, and Brazil, while aluminum imports are primarily sourced from Canada.

Many international industry experts and academics believe the tariff increase will raise prices across a wide range of products—from automobiles to canned goods—impacting both U.S. businesses and consumers and heightening uncertainty in the global trade environment.
