Hong Kong's Civil Aviation Authority: Hong Kong Express and approximately 15 other airlines will move into Terminal 2 of the airport next spring, targeting young passengers and technology enthusiasts.
The expanded Terminal 2 (T2) of the airport, which is being rebuilt with an investment of approximately 12.9 billion Hong Kong dollars to support the Hong Kong Airport's third runway system, will be put into operation in March-April next year.
The expansion of Hong Kong Airport Terminal 2 (T2), which was rebuilt at a cost of approximately 12.9 billion HKD to accommodate the three-runway system, will be operational in March-April next year. Airport Authority's Acting Director of Airport Services, Eddie Yeung, stated that 15 airlines, including Hong Kong Express, Hong Kong Airlines, and several Southeast Asian airlines, will move their counters from Terminal 1 (T1) to T2, while CATHAY PAC AIR (00293) and its business partners will remain at T1.
Yeung mentioned in a local media interview that upon the first phase of T2 operation, it is expected to accommodate 15 million passengers, representing approximately 20% of the annual figure, but with the rapid growth of airlines like Hong Kong Express, the annual passenger volume may quickly reach 20 to 30 million. Depending on the increase in passenger traffic, the Airport Authority will gradually increase the number of airlines stationed at T2, expecting the terminal to serve a maximum of 50 million passengers annually.
Yeung pointed out that T2 is located next to the Airport Express station, where passengers can get off the train and the doors on the left and right will open, with the left side leading to T1 and the right side to T2. After completing check-in and luggage drop-off at Terminal 2, passengers can take the MTR system to the T2 passenger concourse, with a journey time of about 2.5 minutes.
Yeung mentioned that after T2 is operational, the two terminals will have different positioning. He likened it to Central Landmark and Tsim Sha Tsui K11 shopping mall, with T1 catering to business and long-haul travelers with a classic layout, while T2 will focus on the needs of young travelers, emphasizing youthfulness and technology by offering more self-check-in facilities to meet the demands of younger passengers.
He stated that T2 will be launched in stages, with the first phase in September opening the transit bus lobby near the Airport Express station, where there will be 6 stores including dining and convenience stores, and the services will be available. The second phase, scheduled for March-April next year, will see airline counters moving from T1 to T2.
