Transport Department of Hong Kong: Hong Kong has a total of 115 bus routes, with 16 new routes added in the past 5 years.
Lau Chun-sing, Acting Director of Transport and Logistics of Hong Kong, stated at a legislative council meeting that as of May this year, Hong Kong has a total of 115 bus routes, covering Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. Over the past five years, the Hong Kong Transport Department has added 16 new bus routes.
At a meeting of the Legislative Council, Hong Kong's Acting Commissioner for Transport and Logistics, Liao Zhenxin, stated that as of May this year, there are a total of 115 bus routes in Hong Kong, spread out across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. Over the past 5 years, the Transport Department of Hong Kong has added 16 bus routes. Bus routes can effectively reduce the impact of traffic congestion on bus services, improve the stability and efficiency of bus schedules, and provide convenience for citizens.
In response to questions from legislators, Liao Zhenxin mentioned that the Transport Department had studied the possibility of converting some bus routes into "public transport routes" open to other public transport such as taxis and minibuses. The authorities need to consider the pros and cons of this proposal. While it may benefit passengers of minibuses and taxis, it could also lead to increased congestion on bus routes, affecting bus passengers.
In light of changes in traffic flow on Tuen Mun Road and the operation of bus services following the implementation of new tolls at the Tai Lam Tunnel, the Transport Department of Hong Kong will review the arrangement of bus routes on Tuen Mun Road, prioritizing public transport.
If opening certain bus routes can improve the operational efficiency of other public transport services, the Transport Department of Hong Kong will, after considering relevant factors, make better use of these bus routes through different means. Currently, 56 minibus routes have been granted relevant permits.
