Elon Musk announced on May 28 that he will leave the Trump administration and step down as a special government employee, with the White House confirming his resignation processing the same evening. His tenure at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is limited to 130 days, potentially ending by May 30.

On May 28 local time, Elon Musk, head of the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), announced via his social media platform X that he would be stepping down from his role in the Trump administration and would no longer serve as a special government employee. Musk expressed his appreciation to President Donald Trump and noted that the DOGE team would continue its efforts across the federal government.

A White House official stated that the resignation procedures would commence on the evening of May 28. U.S. media reported that, as a special government employee, Musk’s tenure was capped at 130 days and could end as early as May 30.

According to a report from The Washington Post on May 27, Musk described the Department of Government Efficiency as having become a “scapegoat” in Washington. That same day, he returned to SpaceX to observe a Starship test flight and remarked during an interview that reducing the size of the federal government proved more difficult than expected. He also expressed regret over the criticism directed at DOGE. Regarding President Trump’s tax and spending bill, Musk stated that it had undermined his efforts to reduce the U.S. budget deficit.
