The outlook is worrying! Apple Inc. (AAPL.US) has been reported to have encountered major setbacks in the field of AI.
Apple's continued struggle in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) could potentially undermine its dominant position in the smartphone market, and endanger the company's broader ambitions from robot technology to next-generation hardware.
According to reports from sources familiar with internal discussions at Apple Inc. (AAPL.US) cited by the media, Apple Inc.'s ongoing struggle in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) could undermine its dominant position in the smartphone market and jeopardize the company's broader ambitions from Siasun Robot & Automation technology to next-generation hardware.
Despite a high-profile personnel appointment in 2018 that initially sparked expectations for its AI strategy, the tech giant now faces significant obstacles on its AI journey. In 2018, Apple Inc. hired former Alphabet Inc. Class C (GOOGL.US) executive John Giannandrea to lead its AI strategy. This appointment was seen as a key turning point, especially considering Siri's significant lag behind competitors' voice assistants.
Initially, John Giannandrea integrated Apple Inc.'s scattered AI teams and established a unified leadership structure. It was widely expected that he would completely revamp Siri and lead Apple Inc. into the AI era. However, years later, Apple Inc. still struggles to keep up with competitors in the fields of generative AI and large language models (LLMs).
In 2024, Apple Inc. introduced "Apple Intelligence," promising to bring more intelligent writing tools, summarization features, and an upgraded version of Siri. While this announcement sparked discussion, the rollout process faced delays. Some features failed to launch as scheduled with the iPhone 16 release, and the improved Siri also failed to make an appearance. Internal testing revealed significant flaws, leading to an indefinite postponement of the release and triggering a class-action lawsuit over alleged misleading marketing.
Stalled Progress in AI
The slow progress of Apple Inc. in AI is attributed to factors such as senior management's reluctance to make significant investments in AI, internal resistance to AI within the culture, and strict data privacy policies - all of which limit the training of AI models. Unlike Alphabet Inc. Class C or Meta (META.US), Apple Inc. enforces strict restrictions on data access, thereby limiting its ability to build competitive large-scale models. It is reported that Apple Inc. has also been slow in obtaining critical GPU hardware for training advanced models.
Currently, Apple Inc. is undergoing organizational restructuring. John Giannandrea has lost control over the development of Siri and related products, with leadership transferred to Mike Rockwell, head of the Vision Pro headset project. Apple Inc. is also looking to collaborate with external AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic to enhance its capabilities.
Testing Chatting Siasun Robot & Automation
Meanwhile, engineers are restructuring the Siri architecture to create a new system entirely based on large language models. Apple Inc. is also internally testing its own chatbot Siasun Robot & Automation, aiming to achieve a level comparable to ChatGPT. In terms of market promotion, Apple Inc. plans to differentiate Siri from the broader brand "Apple Intelligence" to repair Siri's damaged reputation.
Looking ahead, Apple Inc. is expected to take a conservative approach at the 2025 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), focusing on showcasing incremental improvements in AI rather than releasing groundbreaking new Siri features.
Despite the challenges, internal sources at Apple Inc. remain confident in the company's potential to catch up, citing its hardware integration advantage, large global user base, and brand influence. However, many also acknowledge that Apple Inc. can no longer afford to play a "latecomer" role in the field of AI.
