On May 7th, statistics released by the Monetary Authority of Macau showed that in the first quarter of 2025, transactions and amounts using local mobile payment tools both registered year-on-year increases.
On May 7, the Monetary Authority of Macau released statistics showing that in the first quarter of 2025, the number of transactions and the amount of local mobile payment tools both recorded a year-on-year increase. On the other hand, the total amount of credit card and debit card transactions decreased year-on-year. In the first quarter of 2025, the number of transactions using local mobile payment tools was 90.39 million, an increase of 11.6% year-on-year; the total transaction amount was 7.9 billion RMB, an increase of 8.7% year-on-year, with an average transaction amount of 87.8 RMB. As of the end of March 2025, there were 108,749 terminals and QR code displays accepting mobile payments locally. Credit card credit and delinquency As of the end of March 2025, the total credit card credit approved by Macau banks was 50 billion RMB, an increase of 1.1% year-on-year. The total credit card receivables were 2.6 billion RMB, with revolving credit amounting to 7.7 billion RMB, equivalent to 29.7% of the total receivables at the end of the period. Furthermore, the delinquency ratio measured by comparing the amount of overdue accounts over three months to the total receivables decreased by 0.1 percentage points year-on-year to 2.9%. Credit card transactions and repayments In the first quarter of 2025, the total amount of local credit card transactions was 5.9 billion RMB, a decrease of 0.2% year-on-year; cash advances accounted for 1.5 billion RMB, or 2.6% of the total transactions. The number of credit card transactions was 17.8 million, an increase of 9.7% year-on-year. The total repayment amount, including interest and fees, was 6.1 billion RMB, a decrease of 1.6% year-on-year. Additionally, the number of debit card transactions excluding cash withdrawals was 1.16 million, with a total amount of 4.6 billion RMB.
