Detroit manufacturers collectively issue warning: US-UK trade agreement will harm the US automotive industry
The US Automobile Policy Committee launched a scathing attack on the trade agreement announced by the Trump administration and the UK on Friday, warning that it would harm the interests of American automakers.
The American Automotive Policy Council on Friday strongly criticized the Trump administration's announcement of a trade agreement with the UK, warning that this would harm the interests of American automakers.
Matt Blunt, Chairman of the American Automotive Policy Council, emphasized, "The American automotive industry is highly integrated with Canada and Mexico, but not so much with the UK. We are disappointed with the government's decision to prioritize the UK over North American partners."
"Under this agreement, importing a UK car with very few American components will be cheaper than importing a Mexican or Canadian car that complies with the USMCA and contains 50% American components. This will harm American automakers, suppliers, and automotive workers. We hope that prioritizing UK cars over North American cars will not set a precedent for future negotiations with competitors in Asia and Europe."
The American Automotive Policy Council represents the interests of Ford Motor Company (F.US), General Motors Company (GM.US), and Stellantis (STLA.US).
