From AI chatting to online shopping, OpenAI is striving to make ChatGPT the "universal application" of the AI era.
OpenAI allows users to directly shop within the ChatGPT application, challenging competitors in the generative AI ecosystem such as Google. The search feature is currently only available for a limited number of product categories, but plans to expand to more categories over time.

Perplexity recently announced that paid subscribers of Perplexity Pro in the US market will be able to experience a new AI e-commerce experience called "Buy with Pro," which allows them to quickly obtain information on desired products and market analysis through AI search on the Perplexity website or app, seamlessly view specific products from specific merchants. This means that products from Shopify merchants will be able to be listed in bulk on Perplexity's new AI shopping tool.
In less than two years, OpenAI has expanded the ChatGPT application from a simple question-and-answer AI chatting device to an integrated ecosystem of search engine functions, AI voice assistants, app stores, and e-commerce entrances. In the future, it will focus fully on the concept of a "universal application."
The series of expansions mentioned above reflect OpenAI's ambition to create the so-called "OpenAI Universal Application": to make daily searches, one-click convenient shopping, content generation, AI voice assistants, and other high-frequency scenarios occur within the ChatGPT application, enhancing usage time and data accumulation. Furthermore, in the future, without inserting ads, OpenAI can drive multiple revenue streams through B2B APIs, value-added subscriptions, paid GPTs, commercial AI search, and potential e-commerce traffic commissions, while paving the way for important usage scenarios and big data foundations for future multimodal AGIs.
OpenAI recently forecasted that its revenue will increase nearly 1000% by 2029. The rapid revenue growth expectations of OpenAI will be driven by various means. First, subscription revenue from its flagship product, ChatGPT, is expected to increase from $8 billion in 2025 to $50 billion in 2029; revenue generated from API access permissions is expected to increase from $2 billion currently to $22 billion by 2029; revenues from AI intelligence-related usage are predicted to grow to $29 billion by 2029. Last month, it was reported that the pricing of AI intelligent agents ranges from $2,000 to $20,000 per month, depending on their level of functionality, covering different levels from software development to doctoral-level research.
