According to data from the Hong Kong Tourism Board, there were 1.42 million overnight convention and exhibition visitors last year, an increase of 9% compared to the previous year. The average expenditure per person was 7,800 Hong Kong dollars, 40% higher than the overall tourists. The total number of cruise passengers last year was 355,000, a 63% increase compared to the previous year. The Hong Kong Tourism Board expects to receive 49 million visitors this year, a 10% increase from the previous year, with an average expenditure of approximately 5,500 Hong Kong dollars per person. The average expenditure per tourist in Hong Kong in 2024 is expected to be 5,500 Hong Kong dollars, a 20% decrease from 2023's 6,900 Hong Kong dollars. Mainland Chinese tourists are expected to spend an average of 5,000 Hong Kong dollars, the lowest since 2017; while non-mainland tourists are expected to spend an average of 6,600 Hong Kong dollars, with long-haul market tourists spending an average of 7,500 Hong Kong dollars. Among non-mainland tourists, the largest number of visitors are from Taiwan, with over 1.24 million visitors last year, followed by the Philippines and the United States. Compared to 2023, Russia saw the strongest growth in non-mainland tourists last year, increasing by 1.18 times, followed by South Korea. Cheng Dingyi, the Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, stated that the decrease in average expenditure per mainland Chinese tourist reflects a change in consumer behavior, and the industry needs to transform. The Tourism Board will continue to promote "Tourism+" and "MICE+", hoping to encourage tourists to spend more. The Hong Kong Tourism Board also announced plans to promote the city's authentic culture, hiking trails, islands, educational tours, horse racing, and food. They will launch a new promotional video with the theme "The Nature of Hong Kong at Your Fingertips" and further enhance Hong Kong's image as a "Muslim-friendly" destination by creating new training materials and improving frontline staff's understanding of Muslim culture.
