President Trump of the United States engaged in a heated confrontation with Ukrainian President Zelensky in the Oval Office on Friday, even going as far as warning that Ukraine is "risking the Third World War". However, the overall reaction of the US stock market to this event was muted, as the market is more focused on the possibility of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.
Although the stock market briefly dropped after the news was released, the Wall Street "fear index" briefly soared, the market quickly rebounded. Keith Lerner, Co-Chief Investment Officer of Truist Advisory Services, stated that the market seems to view Trump's remarks as political "drama" and has not changed investors' view that there is still hope for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. Lerner said, "Whether this judgment is right or wrong, the trends of the US stock market and European stock markets indicate that the market still believes that some kind of agreement will eventually be reached."
The meeting between Trump and Zelensky was originally intended to deepen US-Ukraine mineral trade and promote the Russia-Ukraine peace process, but the meeting ended prematurely due to the heightened emotions on both sides, causing a brief market shock. However, during the afternoon trading session, the overall market rebounded, as investors gradually digested the unexpected conflict.
According to sources, after the public argument between Trump and Zelensky, Trump and his senior advisers urgently discussed in the Oval Office and eventually decided to have Zelensky leave the White House. The Ukrainian delegation waited in another room for nearly an hour, hoping to continue to advance mineral trade and salvage the visit.
However, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz then approached Zelensky directly and informed him to leave the White House. Thus, the visit came to an abrupt end without any agreements being reached, nor any clear commitment of US continued support for Ukraine.
Later, Trump posted on the social platform Truth Social, stating that Zelensky "disrespected in the sacred Oval Office of the United States" and said, "He can come back when he is ready to talk about peace."
Officials stressed that this conflict was not a "premeditated ambush" on Trump's part. "Our plan was to sign a mineral agreement, establish economic partnerships, and push for the peace process." However, Vice President Pence stated during the meeting with reporters that diplomatic negotiations with Russia are the only way to achieve peace, which provoked strong dissatisfaction from Zelensky. Zelensky angrily responded, emphasizing that Putin had repeatedly violated agreements and questioned Pence, "What exactly do you mean by diplomacy?"
This dispute escalated the atmosphere of the meeting rapidly, with both Trump and Pence accusing Zelensky of disrespecting the United States, while Zelensky tried to interrupt them multiple times. Trump even stated in the heated confrontation that Zelensky is "risking the Third World War".
After the breakdown of the meeting, US allies quickly voiced support for Zelensky, and Democratic lawmakers also condemned Trump for "bullying" the wartime president of Ukraine. However, Trump's advisory team blamed Zelensky for the conflict, believing that he could have easily acknowledged the Vice President's point of view and continued the meeting, but he failed to do so. A White House official stated, "He could have simply acknowledged the Vice President's point of view and proceeded with the meeting, but he couldn't do it."
This conflict may have serious consequences for Ukraine. Zelensky has repeatedly acknowledged that the Ukrainian military is highly dependent on further assistance from the US, which is currently still uncertain. Trump emphasized multiple times during the meeting that without US support, Ukraine can hardly influence the course of the war.
Apart from the diplomatic conflict, Trump also showed clear dissatisfaction with Zelensky's attire. According to two sources, Trump's team had advised Zelensky multiple times to abandon the military uniform when visiting the White House, as a sign of respect. Although Zelensky wore a more formal black outfit with the emblem of Ukraine during this visit, he did not wear a suit.
When Trump shook hands with Zelensky at the White House door, he deliberately commented, "He is dressed somewhat formally today." However, it is apparent that this did not meet Trump's expected standard.
Analysts point out that this conflict between Trump and Zelensky may mark a significant turning point in US policy towards Ukraine. A senior US official revealed that the US side was dissatisfied with Ukraine's repeated attitude on the mineral trade. "The Ukrainians have been evasive on this deal, and this meeting has become a crucial turning point." The official said, "Washington's era of blank checks for Zelensky has ended, but he is unaware of it."
On the Ukrainian side, there is anger over Trump's attempt to push a deal that "seriously favors US interests", believing that the US has excluded Ukraine from discussions about its future with Russia. After leaving the White House, Zelensky canceled the next two public events and posted a brief statement on the social media platform X, thanking the American people, Congress, and Trump for their support.
