On Thursday, Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN.US) cloud computing division AWS announced the launch of a new quantum computing chip called "Ocelot." Previously, tech giants Alphabet Inc. Class C (GOOGL.US) and Microsoft Corporation (MSFT.US) had also introduced similar products. In a blog post, Amazon.com, Inc.'s web services stated that the "Ocelot" chip could reduce the cost of implementing quantum error correction by up to 90% compared to current methods.
Quantum chips are used to perform computing tasks, and unlike the traditional binary system (which uses values of 1 or 0), quantum chips use quantum bits (qubits) that can exist in a state of both 1 and 0 simultaneously. This enables quantum chips to greatly increase speed in complex computing processes such as drug development.
Earlier in February, Microsoft Corporation launched a new quantum chip called "Majorana 1," which is made from a new material state called topological superconductor. Before that, Alphabet Inc. Class C had also introduced a new quantum computing chip called "Willow."
Amazon.com, Inc. stated that the "Ocelot" chip employs a new architecture design, building error correction mechanisms from the ground up, and utilizing "cat qubit" technology named after the famous Schrdinger's cat thought experiment.
Amazon.com, Inc. claimed, "Researchers at Amazon.com, Inc.'s web services have integrated cat qubit technology with other quantum error correction components onto a microchip for the first time and utilized manufacturing processes in the microelectronics industry to enable scalable chip production."
Following this news from Amazon.com, Inc., stocks related to quantum computing saw a slight increase in after-hours trading. As of the time of writing, D-Wave Quantum (QBTS.US) rose by 1.98%, Quantum Computing (QUBT.US) rose by 0.57%, Rigetti Computing (RGTI.US) rose by 2.74%, Arqit Quantum (ARQQ.US) rose by 1.2%, and SkyWater Technology (SKYT.US) rose by 1.2%.
