The new Hong Kong budget proposes setting aside HK$1 billion to establish the Hong Kong Artificial Intelligence Research Institute. On February 27, the Secretary for Innovation and Technology of Hong Kong attended a press conference to elaborate on the measures in the budget for the financial year 2025-2026. He stated that he hopes to obtain approval from the Legislative Council by mid-year and that the research institute is expected to begin operations as early as next year.
He mentioned that there are new developments in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), predicting that AI development will continue to advance rapidly. Hong Kong needs to further integrate resources, and the research institute will focus on promoting basic research and applications of AI in areas such as innovation and technology, finance, healthcare, and government services, aiming to lead and bring business opportunities to the Hong Kong industry.
He also pointed out that the HeTao Deep Bay Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone is an engine for high-quality development in the Greater Bay Area, which is highly valued by both the national and SAR governments. Efforts will be made to ensure the smooth connection of systems between the two regions and accelerate infrastructure development.
