Apple Inc. confirmed on Monday local time that its self-developed consumer electronics core processor has started mass production at the newly built chip manufacturing plant in Arizona, United States, owned by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Sponsored ADR. In response to this news, the share price of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Sponsored ADR remained flat in pre-market trading, while Apple Inc.'s share price fell by nearly 1%.
In a recent statement, Apple Inc. stated, "As the largest customer of this globally advanced chip factory, and with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Sponsored ADR's production facilities in the United States employing over 2,000 employees to manufacture chips domestically, mass production of Apple Inc.'s chips started last month."
Apple Inc. also announced an increase in the overall size of the so-called "U.S. Advanced Chip Manufacturing Fund" from $5 billion to $10 billion. As part of the expansion plan, the consumer electronics giant, known for its iPhone and iPad products, revealed a "multi-billion dollar commitment" to produce advanced chips at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Sponsored ADR's Fab 21 factory in Arizona.
Back in 2022, Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook had informed employees that Apple Inc. would begin purchasing chips from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Sponsored ADR's Arizona factory in 2024.
The announcement also revealed that Apple Inc. plans to invest over $500 billion domestically in the United States over the next four years, creating an additional 20,000 high-end manufacturing jobs. Analysts widely believe that Apple Inc.'s move is aimed at avoiding potential losses from the high tariffs imposed by the Trump administration and responding to the administration's call to bring chip manufacturing back to the United States.
It is currently unknown which consumer electronic device chips Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Sponsored ADR's Arizona plant is manufacturing for Apple Inc., but based on previous market rumors, it is likely to be the A16-class smartphone chip used in the iPhone 14 Pro series products initially released in 2023, along with the possibility of producing S9 system-in-package chips for the Apple Watch Ultra 2 (2024 model).
The Fab 21 chip factory in Arizona, USA specializes in the 4nm advanced process node and is expected to start mass production in the first half of 2025. According to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Sponsored ADR's management plan, the company's second chip plant in the United States will provide 3nm and 2nm capacity, with production expected to begin in 2028. The third plant will target even more advanced process nodes of 2nm and below.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Sponsored ADR has recently even discussed plans to produce NVIDIA Corporation's Blackwell architecture AI GPU at its chip factory in Arizona. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Sponsored ADR is currently the world's largest contract chip manufacturer, and with the continuing wave of enthusiasm for AI and its impact on the global market, customers such as NVIDIA Corporation, AMD, Broadcom Inc., and other chip giants are benefiting from the rapid growth trend in AI chip infrastructure. The increased scale of chip manufacturing contracts with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Sponsored ADR has driven the company's performance to continue to exceed expectations and expand strongly since last year, providing important logical support for the company's shares in the Taiwan stock exchange and the US stock exchange to repeatedly hit new highs.
