Tencent's largest shareholder, the investment giant Prosus NV, which has long focused on the technology sector, has agreed to acquire "Europe's Meituan" Just Eat Takeaway.com NV for 4.1 billion euros (approximately 4.3 billion U.S. dollars). This is the largest acquisition deal in the company's history to date and aims to explore new investment growth opportunities. Tencent's largest shareholder Prosus has recently entered a "buy buy buy" mode. In December last year, it acquired the Latin American online travel leader Despegar.com Corp for 1.7 billion U.S. dollars, interpreted by the investment community as the company actively "seeking the next Tencent". According to a statement released by the company on Monday, the all-cash transaction is priced at 20.30 euros per share, a premium of approximately 49% over the three-month volume-weighted average price of Just Eat Takeaway.com NV, a company listed in the Netherlands. The stock closed at 12.43 euros last Friday. Investment giant Prosus NV is deploying capital in an efficient manner, with the CEO planning to double the overall value of the company within four years. This acquisition showcases the aggressive expansion strategy led by Prosus CEO Fabricio Bloisi. The company is best known for its groundbreaking investment in Chinese tech giant Tencent (00700) in 2001, through its South African parent company Naspers Ltd., which acquired Tencent shares for just $34 million and is now worth over $140 billion. With the recent surge in Tencent's stock price, the market's interest in Naspers has also significantly increased, driving a sharp rise in Naspers' stock price on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in South Africa. With WeChat integrating DeepSeek, the AI-based new monetization approach with 1 billion active users could bring new revenue streams to Tencent, a logic already validated by Meta, Facebook's parent company. As a result, some Wall Street institutions are optimistic that Tencent's market value will surpass the $1 trillion mark. Currently, Tencent's total market value is around $580 billion, while Meta's total market value is as high as $1.73 trillion. With DeepSeek leading the "low-cost computing power revolution worldwide", the cost of AI training and application inference AI is decreasing, driving AI application software (especially generative AI software and AI agents) to penetrate various industries worldwide, completely revolutionizing efficiency in various business scenarios and significantly increasing sales. Software giants such as Meta, Salesforce, AppLovin, Alibaba, and Tencent may see exponential revenue growth from AI revenue and profits, making them potentially the biggest winners under the "DeepSeek low computing power cost shockwave". A recent research report from Goldman Sachs pointed out that with the rapid development of generative AI technology and the continuous expansion of application scenarios, Tencent is expected to become a core beneficiary in the field of AI applications due to its strong ecosystem in consumer-facing applications and a user base of billions. Fabricio Bloisi, a Brazilian CEO who took over Prosus last year, said in an interview in January that the company has nearly $20 billion in available cash reserves and is prepared to invest heavily in expansion in the European market. This transaction is the second major acquisition in its flagship plan to double the company's value in four years. In a recent interview, Bloisi said, "After completing this transaction, my plan is to accelerate the growth pace of all businesseswe believe that the combination with JustEat Takeaway will achieve faster performance growth." Bloisi, who oversees Prosus and Naspers, has rich experience in the express delivery and logistics investment field and has previously developed Brazil's iFood into the country's largest online food delivery platform. Headquartered in Amsterdam, Just Eat Takeaway.com covers 17 large international markets worldwide, connecting 61 million consumers with over 356,000 local partners. Just Eat Takeaway.com is a Dutch-based online food ordering and delivery platform established in 2000. The company connects consumers with restaurants through its website and mobile app, providing takeaway services, and has earned the title of "Europe's Meituan". Just Eat Takeaway.com operates in multiple countries, including the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, and Australia. Its primary business model is as an intermediary, taking commissions from restaurants for each order.
