According to reports, on February 22nd, the American electric flying car company Alef Aeronautics completed flight tests in an urban environment. Alef CEO personally tested the prototype of the flying car Model A on a remote public road in the United States, demonstrating vertical take-off and crossing over obstacles like other cars.
Since Elon Musk's SpaceX is also an investor in this company, some internet users jokingly referred to Model A as "Musk's new car." The price of this car is $300,000, approximately 2.17 million Chinese yuan, with the first batch set to be delivered by the end of the year.
In addition, Alef plans to produce a more affordable flying car, Model Z, with a price tag of only $35,000, which can seat up to four people.
It is worth noting that both domestic and international flying car companies have started to accelerate their development. Currently, the Dutch company Pal-V has launched its two-seat flying car for sale, while American company Joby Aviation's aircraft has received FAA approval, and Audi and Airbus are collaborating to create the modular flying car Pop.Up NEXT.
Locally, Chery Automobile and Tsinghua University recently released a patent for a "separated flying car" with a unique three-module structure - "aircraft + chassis + cabin." This is following Chery's previous successful development of a three-sided composite wing flying car in October 2024.
Guangzhou Automobile Group plans to launch a demonstration operation in the Greater Bay Area by 2027, while Chang'an and EHang Holdings Ltd. have invested 20 billion RMB to explore low-altitude air travel ecosystems. Xpeng Huizhou's "land-based aircraft carrier" with separate design modules has already received 3,000 orders, set to begin production by 2025. Geely has also accelerated technology integration through the acquisition of Terrafugia.
By 2024, the first Chinese flying car research report "Flying Car Development White Paper 1.0" predicts that from 2025, flying cars will enter the commercialization phase. By around 2035, intelligent eVTOL flying cars will become the main form of low-altitude transportation, leading to the mass application of amphibious flying cars by around 2050, integrating low-altitude and ground transportation into a three-dimensional smart transportation system.
Cities such as Suzhou, Hangzhou, Zhuhai, and Wuxi have been promoting low-altitude operations and airspace management through legislation and platform construction, offering opportunities for activities like aerial sightseeing, aerial taxis, and logistics delivery.
Morgan Stanley forecasts that the global market for flying cars will reach $9 trillion by 2050, with a potential market size in China of $2.1 trillion.
China Aviation Securities believes that in the short term, discussions at the upcoming two sessions in the next month will likely focus on topics such as low-altitude economy and commercial spaceflight, pushing for supportive policies and accelerated industry progress. In 2025, attention could be given to specific areas such as solid-state batteries, motor control systems, and drone countermeasures, offering opportunities for companies with core technologies to achieve additional returns.
