Alphabet Inc. Class C (GOOGL.US) announced on Wednesday that the company will start using artificial intelligence to determine the age of users to see if they are suitable for its products. Alphabet Inc. Class C announced this new technology for determining user age in a blog titled "Providing New Digital Protections for Children, Teens, and Parents." A spokesperson confirmed that Alphabet Inc. Class C's products will be utilizing automation, including YouTube. Alphabet Inc. Class C, which has billions of users, has restrictions on some services for users under 18 years old.
Jenn Fitzpatrick, Senior Vice President of "core" technology team at Alphabet Inc. Class C, wrote in the blog post, "This year we will begin testing a machine learning-based age estimation model in the United States." The core technology department is responsible for building the technical foundation behind the company's flagship products and protecting users' online safety.
Fitzpatrick wrote, "This model can help us estimate whether a user is over 18 or under 18 years old, so we can take protective measures and provide a more age-appropriate experience."
This latest artificial intelligence initiative comes as legislators are putting pressure on online platforms to implement more regulations for child safety. The company stated that over time, it will bring the AI-based age estimation feature to more countries. Meta introduced a similar feature in September, using AI to determine if someone may be lying about their age.
Alphabet Inc. Class C and other companies in the tech industry have been increasingly relying on artificial intelligence for various tasks and products. Using AI in age-related content represents the latest frontier for Alphabet Inc. Class C in artificial intelligence. Despite restructuring the department last year, laying off hundreds of employees and transferring some positions to India and Mexico, the company's "core" team is still taking new initiatives.
