OpenAI is set to release a new artificial intelligence model called GPT-4.5. CEO Sam Altman announced on social media platform X on Wednesday that the model internally referred to as Orion will be launched in "a few weeks." Reports in November stated that Orion had not yet met OpenAI's performance expectations. The release of GPT-4.5 will mark the end of an era for OpenAI.
Altman stated that the model will be the last one released by the company that does not use additional computational power to mimic human reasoning, making it the "last non-causal thinking model" from OpenAI. The company has incorporated causal reasoning models in some of its updated models, including o1 and o3.
Altman mentioned in his posts that OpenAI will integrate its GPT model (which powered the initial ChatGPT chatbot) with its new o series models to create an artificial intelligence system that can automatically determine the time to think about a query before providing an answer. The goal is to simplify the experience so that users are not forced to choose from increasingly complex options.
Altman acknowledged in his posts that OpenAI's product line has become complicated, and the company aims to "do better at simplifying products." He stated, "We, like our users, do not like model choosers; we want to get back to a unified intelligence experience."
Following GPT-4.5, Altman mentioned that a key goal for OpenAI is to "unify the o series models with the GPT series models by creating a system that can utilize all our tools, knowing when to spend time thinking and when not, and be broadly applicable for various tasks."
Altman revealed that OpenAI is working on the release of the GPT-5 model later this year, planning to launch it as a system that integrates multiple technologies, including o3 technology. The company has already released a smaller version of this system, called o3-mini, but the full model has not yet been released.
