Apple Inc. (AAPL.US) has expanded its streaming video service Apple TV+ to the Android system for the first time. This move aims to increase its streaming users and enhance the competitiveness of its streaming service.
Since its launch in 2019, Apple TV+ has been limited to Apple Inc.'s own operating system and third-party TV platforms (such as Roku). The Android system is the biggest competitor to Apple Inc. in the smartphone market. Although Apple Inc. also offers music service applications for the Android system, the company usually tries to keep users within its own product ecosystem.
Apple Inc.'s rare move to provide services on the Android system indicates that the company is trying to increase the attractiveness of Apple TV+ and challenge streaming platforms like Netflix (NFLX.US) and the Walt Disney Company+. Despite releasing some popular works on Apple TV+, industry estimates suggest that its user base lags far behind some of the larger platforms. Additionally, Apple Inc. has never disclosed user or revenue data for Apple TV+. The initial price for Apple TV+ was $4.99 per month and has now increased to $9.99 per month.
In addition to launching Apple TV+ on the Android system, Apple Inc. will also offer season tickets for the Major League Soccer (MLS) to Android users of Apple TV+. This service will be launched in February 2023, allowing fans to watch MLS games.
