Insiders revealed that Meta (META.US) is in discussions to acquire the South Korean artificial intelligence chip startup FuriosaAI, with the deal potentially being completed as early as this month. Reports suggest that Meta is one of several companies interested in acquiring this artificial intelligence startup. If Meta acquires FuriosaAI, the social media giant may design and manufacture its own artificial intelligence chips instead of relying on NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA.US) in a tight chip supply situation.
Last week, the company raised 2 billion Korean won (approximately $1.4 million) from the South Korean venture capital firm CRIT Ventures. To date, FuriosaAI has raised approximately 170 billion Korean won (approximately $115 million) with early participation from South Korean internet company Naver and the Seoul-based DSC investment company. FuriosaAI was founded by former Samsung Electronics and AMD employee June Paik in 2017. A recent document shows that he owns 18.4% of the shares in his startup company.
