On February 11, the Hong Kong government's Census and Statistics Department released the results of the monthly survey on the business conditions of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in January 2025. The current trend index of business revenue for SMEs in Hong Kong decreased from 43.9 in December 2024 to 43.1 in January 2025, while the business revenue outlook index for the next month (February 2025) was 43.8. By industry analysis, many industries covered in the survey saw a decrease in the current trend index of business revenue in January 2025 compared to the previous month, especially in the logistics industry (from 42.4 to 38.5) and commercial services industry (from 48.4 to 45.6).
The current trend index of new orders in the import and export trade industry decreased from 46.5 in December 2024 to 46.1 in January 2025, while the outlook index for new orders for the next month (February 2025) was 46.9.
A government spokesperson stated that due to increased uncertainties in the external environment, the overall business sentiment of SMEs in Hong Kong and their expectations for business conditions in the next month declined in January. The overall employment situation remained stable.
The spokesperson added that the uncertainty in the global economy will continue to pose challenges to the business environment. However, various measures to boost the Mainland China economy and support Hong Kong, as well as the measures taken by the Hong Kong SAR government to boost market sentiment and promote economic development, should provide support for the business environment.
