As the Lunar New Year approaches, the Hong Kong Tourism Board predicts that there will be around 1.45 million mainland Chinese tourists entering Hong Kong during the 8-day Golden Week holiday period, an increase of 15% compared to last year. The number has already returned to 90% of pre-pandemic levels, with the peak influx of mainland tourists expected to occur from the second day to the fourth day of the Lunar New Year (January 30th to February 1st), with the highest daily influx reaching 210,000 mainland tourists.
Mainland tourists entering Hong Kong are mainly independent travelers, with over 2,000 tour groups, accounting for about 5% of the total mainland tourists. The Council estimates that 70% of mainland tour groups will stay overnight in Hong Kong, with most staying for a two-day, one-night trip, and hotel occupancy rates during the Chinese New Year period are expected to be close to 90%.
Yang Shufen, the Secretary-General of the Council, stated that there are many festive activities in Hong Kong every day during the Lunar New Year, including float parades and fireworks displays. In addition, the Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees in Tai Po also have a strong festive atmosphere, and with Shenzhen reopening for multiple entries, it is believed that the market will be bustling during the Chinese New Year period.
