According to the professional version of the lighthouse, the presale of the 2025 Chinese New Year film market started on January 19th, with only 40 minutes, and the presale box office of the season exceeded 10 million yuan, breaking the record for the fastest presale breaking 10 million yuan in Chinese film history. As of 14:27 on that day, the presale box office of the season exceeded one billion yuan, breaking the record for the fastest presale breaking one billion yuan in Chinese New Year film history! As of the time of writing, "The Legend of the Condor Heroes: The Great Hero of Chivalry", "Ne Zha: The Devil Child's Ocean Ruckus", and "Detective Tang 1900" ranked the top three in the presale box office list for the Chinese New Year season.
Against the backdrop of a 5.6% year-on-year decline in global box office in 2024, the domestic film market achieved a box office of 42.502 billion yuan, recovering about 70% from its historical peak, a recovery rate better than the global average. The industry believes that from the total box office of over 40 billion yuan in 2024 to the sales over one billion yuan of six new films in the 2025 Chinese New Year season, are all signals of the recovery of the film market.
Currently, the 2025 Chinese New Year season has formed a "six-strong competition" pattern. The mythological epic film "Fengshen Part 2: The Battle of Xiqi", the sequel to the Chinese animated box office champion "Ne Zha: The Devil Child's Ocean Ruckus", the martial arts film "The Legend of the Condor Heroes: The Great Hero of Chivalry", the comedy suspense action film "Detective Tang 1900", the military war film "Operation Deep Dragon", and the family-friendly animated film "Boonie Bears: Reboot the Future" have all been announced to be released during the Chinese New Year season.
Among the six films, five are sequels to IP series. In addition to the strong foundation of IP, factors such as diverse genres, high special effects content, strong appeal of the main creators, and the increasing importance of the season have also become reasons for the industry's optimism about the performance of the Chinese New Year season this year.
Looking at the 2025 Chinese New Year season, a number of visual effects blockbusters such as "Fengshen Part 2: The Battle of Xiqi" and "Ne Zha: The Devil Child's Ocean Ruckus" will be released, making the Chinese New Year season in the Year of the Snake the most visually spectacular. In addition, films such as "East Island" and "The Escort: Winds of the Desert" have gained popularity before their release, further fueling expectations for the 2025 China Film Co., Ltd. market.
Wei Pengju, director of the Cultural and Economic Research Institute of Central University of Finance and Economics, said, "The Chinese New Year season is an important period for the film market to gather strength. The presale box office exceeding one billion yuan shows its potential to break the box office record for the season."
The Chinese New Year season is a battleground for listed film companies. ALI PICTURES, Wanda Film Holding, Bona Film Group, China Film Co., Ltd., and other companies have participated in the production of multiple Chinese New Year season films.

Central China Research Report pointed out that the performance of the 2025 Chinese New Year season is worth short-term attention. Considering that the Chinese New Year season is one of the most important periods of the year, able to release a large amount of box office energy in a short period of time, it has attracted many high-quality domestic films to be scheduled for release during the Chinese New Year season. The overall quality of films during this season is also at a higher level throughout the year. In addition, movie subsidies in many regions can cover the Chinese New Year season, helping to further stimulate audience inflow to cinemas and unleash the potential of film consumption. If the box office performance of the Chinese New Year season exceeds expectations, it is expected to drive the performance recovery and valuation increase of the film and television sector.
"The total box office of the 2025 Chinese New Year season is expected to reach a historical high. Considering the number of viewers and the average ticket price, we predict that the total box office of the 2025 Chinese New Year season will be 8.4 billion yuan," said Guotai Junan Securities.
